Throughout your routine, a bell rings clearly, always in full view, never hidden. Then, in the final moments of a show, the audience realizes the bell never had a clapper at all. In fact, there was never any sound. Just a second before the sound vanishes, the bell rings, and the clapper is seen. The next moment, both the sound and clapper are gone.
