After years of using it to fool magic’s brightest minds, Craig Petty has finally released his groundbreaking solution to one of magic’s most iconic challenges.

Since being first introduced by David Berglas in the 1950s, the concept of a perfect Any Card at Any Number (ACAAN) has fascinated and perplexed magicians. Also known as The Berglas Effect, this holy grail of magic is where a freely-named card is shown to reside at a freely-named number in a deck of cards. They say a card. They say a number. And, with no tricky moves, that card is shown to be at that number in a deck of cards.

While the effect is simple to describe, creating a viable method has been a challenge countless magicians have attempted to conquer. While some have been quite successful, it often come with some sort of caveat that strays away from the simplicity that makes Berglas-style effects so fascinating.

Then, in early 2021, Craig Petty made a novel discovery that allows any magician to perform a routine that is about as close to the legendary Berglas Effect as we've ever seen on a mainstream level. Most importantly though, its not some convoluted impractical solution. This is an easy-to-do, incredibly fooling routine that works every time.

The Atomic Deck Effect at a Glance

A deck is openly on the table and everyone is asked to think of a card and any number they’d like. There are no forces and they can change their mind as many times as they want. They even double down to ensure they avoid commonly selected cards and numbers. Once everyone is satisfied, you invite them to watch intently as you slowly and deliberately pick up the deck and start dealing. You place cards on the table one by one until the freely chosen number is reached. That card is turned over and revealed to be a perfect match.

Their card. Their number. Every single time.

"That's better than any version of Any Card at Any Number that I've ever done... That genuinely is the cleanest version of Any Card At Any Number that I've ever seen in my life." Peter Turner

Note: Although a phone-less option is possible, the easiest method does use a borrowed phone for the effect.

Here is what legendary Mentalist Marc Paul, who was a friend and student of David Berglas and performed one of the most perfect ACAANs ever seen on national television had to say about “Atomic Deck”: "That is the Berglas effect... You've cracked it. This is every magician's dream... It's the closest version to The Holy Grail that I've seen anyone do."

Everything You Need to Know

While this might seem like real magic to people you perform for, we feel obligated to let you know that it is still a magic trick. So, yes, there is a method required. But, once you see how effortlessly the method, presentation, and gimmicks work together, it will feel like real magic.

“The Atomic Deck” comes with a specially-designed deck of cards that does 90% of the work for you. It’s a truly innovative creation that took years to create.

If you own Craig’s other projects, you likely assumed there was some sort of roughing element like a spray, stick, or powder. But, it's actually way more clever than that. Craig has sourced special decks with a revolutionary stock that helps facilitate the method without any roughing chemicals at all.

Just like as seen in the trailer, you really can let non-magicians look through the “Atomic Deck” pretty openly. Even if they examine it, laypeople won't notice a thing. These cards will also last you just as long as a normal deck of cards because there is nothing that will rub or off or wear away with use.

As far as other magicians go, they're going to be fooled. In fact, they'll be that type of fooled that makes them a little angry. You won't be able to let them inspect the deck closely though. If a magician gets their hands on the cards for long enough, they'll be able to recognize something is up.

In our opinion, the fact magicians can't inspect the cards is an extremely minor drawback, and worth the trade-off that it allows "Atomic Deck" to be done with no sleight of hand. If you can deal cards. You can perform this. It really is that easy.

There’s also no mental math. Yes, there are some pretty crazy mathematics that happen behind the scenes to make this work, but you don’t have to worry about any of that because your phone (or their phone) does all the hard work for you. While using a custom-made, genuine-looking statistics webpage, they'll unknowingly give you all the information you need.

This is so natural and organic, it really doesn’t even feel like part of the trick. In fact, they technically don’t even need to say their card and/or number out loud before you start dealing.

Not a fan of using a phone during your act? Don’t worry. Multiple additional methods are taught that allow you to perform “Atomic Deck” with seemingly no phone in play.

Everything is explained in the comprehensive tutorial video. As you’ve come to expect from Craig Petty, no stone is left unturned. You’ll learn every detail needed to start frying brains with “Atomic Deck”, as well as tons of variations and bonus content that ensure you can squeeze every drop of astonishment out of “The Atomic Deck”.

Customer reviews for Atomic Deck

Dave
This is such a difficult deck of cards to review for a number of reasons. This IS a rough and smooth deck BUT it is not a rough and smooth deck - with a new method for achieving the same effect as R&S. It works well and I think is easier than a standard RS deck. I am not yet convinced that 90% of the chosen combinations of card and location works, certainly not for me while I have been playing with the website - but when the combination does work then the deck performs very well and the card will always be at the desired location, basically if you can count and deal cards you can perform this. Getting to grips with the new R&S method is dead easy and in my opinion, much easier than a standard R&S deck. The cards are very thin and I think they will need to be handled with care to prevent creases and other damage. Using this with groups and on stage will give you a really memorable closer for sure. I like this and will be using it.
Seth
Disappointing that the video misleads.

The trick revolves around using a phone and a website. That doesn't come across at all in the video I saw.

It's a bit of a miracle for magicians, but not for spectators. Some good engineering here, but it's not the source of wonder it appears to be.

I'd return it if I could.

atomicnotes.netlify.app is the notes website
Covert.unistats.org is the covert input

Craig, you just won Trick of the Year in my opinion! Atomic Deck is SO STINKIN' GOOD!

The reviewers on here (and elsewhere, I'm sure) that are complaining about the tutorial and feeling mislead by the trailer need to get a life. The tutorial is incredible. The negative comments about the tutorial not getting to the point immediately are not valid. What the heck is wrong with the tutorial taking its time getting to the explanation? And it's not like there isn't a timestamp screen at the start, telling you where each section starts. So to give Atomic Deck a bad review because of this is totally not fair.

This deck and this effect KILLS. Revolutionary in design, insane in concept, and brilliant in execution.

Craig, Lloyd, Josh, Rich, and the entire team at Murphy's: CONGRATULATIONS on this one! I'm thrilled to own THREE (I wanted backups just in case AND I wanted one of those tickets!)
Richard
This trick is ingenious beyond measure. It is accompanied by — and I'm not kidding — over SIX AND A HALF HOURS of performance and explanatory videos. The first video is titled "6 Minute Explanation." If only. There's no attempt to explain all the purchaser needs to know. Instead there is a lengthy interchange between Petty and another guy who spends most of the video being amazed by what he is learning. You CAN learn the gist of the principle involved from this almost 13 minute video, but nowhere to be found is the critical information necessary to perform the trick — a link to the necessary website.

OK, so I went to the TWO HOUR long full explanation video. I didn't watch the whole thing, but after over an hour of spot searching, I couldn’t find the essentials — the URL of the website and how to use the information outlined in the “6 Minute Explanation.” Thanks to the VI community, I found the necessary info (it begins 1h07m into the LONG explanation video), but even then, the trick is revealed in dialogue rather than taught directly to you, so you don’t feel like the student, you feel like you’re auditing a discussion between two people who already know what you have yet to learn. Frankly, I can’t imagine a more inefficient way of imparting knowledge. There’s not really that much to know, but it takes FOREVER to hit all the bullet points. Take notes.

Craig Petty’s videos are all profusely verbose. The tricks are clever, brilliant even, but when what you need to know is buried within HOURS of perhaps interesting, but unnecessary blather, the ratio of those who take the time to learn the trick to those who have purchased it must be minuscule.

5 stars for the trick. 1 star for the videos.
Stefan
This is the best card trick i have seen. Just think about it, they name a card, they name a number, you deal and it hits every single time. There are some cards and numbers that won’t work but it is so easy to just tell to your spectator “I want it to be as random as possible so change whatever you want as many times as you want”, it is even stronger cuz they didn’t know what are they gonna say, how could you, right? Input methods are ingenious, my favorite is notebook one. Deck is ingenious, works amazing and it is really good quality. This is 10 out of 10.
Jim
Like Rubic,s cube tricks, magicians are obsessed with ACAAN. I don.t think it,s nearly as impressive to lay audiences.

The video advertisement is quite deceptive, purposely hiding the fact that a website MUST be used for this trick

The explanation video goes on and on and on about what a great routine this is, without explaining the method.

I will be suspicious of both Murphy Magic & Craig Petty in the future. Although I love several Petty items, this one, although clever & innovative, is not going to be a crowd pleaser. There is nothing worse than boring magic & this routine requires a lenghly explanation of the website as well as often dealing a ton of cards. These two requirements make it unworthy of performance for me. I'll try it out on some audiences before I sell it, but I suspect it will be up for sale at the upcoming swap meet in APRIL.
Ryan
Sadly not a fan of this one. My expectations weren't unrealistic, as I didn't know the method, but it had to use a certain mechanism somehow. That wasn't what made this disappointing to me. The quality I feel isn't there.
Let me expand. The packaging, the video tutorials wonderful. The cards themselves come in below what I would feel comfortable using.
If you have a style like that of Craig, I do believe this trick will workout great for you. For me and my personal style, it just isn't going to work as I'd hope. There are other ACAAN I can do.
On a positive note, the thinking and the method that went into this. Amazing! That in and of itself is worth the price of admission so to say. You get to see a glimpse into how Craig and those involved thought about this and that is valuable within itself. If you're not interested in learning how this is done and expanding you magical knowledge, then this isn't the trick for you.
If, however, you're curios on how they did this and the other tidbits you'll pick up from listening to three masters (Craig, Lloyd, and Peter Turner) then pick this up.
I think this can play well for some. For others not so much. I think in certain situations it will play well and others not so much. That'll be up to you to decide where it fits or doesn't fit into your act.
All in all though, it's a really cool trick and way they made it happen, but as for something that would work for me, not so much.
Barry
I love the ACAAN plot and have used various methods over the years. The thing that I don't like about this is the use of a phone and web site, plus the cards can't be inspected or used for anything else. My deck was faulty out of the box. The top card had bend/crease on the short edge, so it doesn't 'perform' as it should. It is a great idea, but I don't think I'll be using it because of the phone/website thing. I'll be sticking with FAST as it is a standard deck that I can use for other tricks after performing ACAAN. But thanks to Craig and co. For coming up with the idea.
David
This is not a real ACAAN. Way overhyped product with false advertising. This is not the holy grail. Don't waste your money.
Graeme
Craig is a genius. Until we discover real magic this will always be the next best thing. The effect can be learnt in minutes but better if performed after practicing (like most tricks) - the more practice the better and more reliable the outcome. The wording of your patter is also important and this is covered in detail in the tutorial. Craig & co have now provided owners with more information which can totally eliminate the need for a phone but, to be honest, using a phone will fly by the spectator as is does not detract from the effect. It is true that the reliability of the effect is not 100% (unless performing to a group) but this is easily addressed and again covered in the tutorial.

This is now my #1 EDC and I have purchased a second copy in case it becomes unavailable in the future.
John
Well, this was good with the website app, but was elevated with the cribs. The web app is used on any phone and is great for large groups but the crib is great for small intimate group settings.
George
In terms of the method and effect itself, this is excellent. Fantastic ACAAN. Phone is awesome for me and suits how I like to perform. I think it’s even more engaging with the phone for the audience . Love the website!!!

As a worker, this for me is not a close up effect I will use that much or maybe just to close a set for a VIP etc. I have done this so far in parlor shows. One of the main strengths of this card effect that nobody is talking about is how it plays big! You can have your entire audience on their phone on the website at the same time then work the effect from there. Super engaging for the audience. Big win for parlor use.

Cards are super thin and have to be for this. They must be handled with care. Even a fumble with them can land you with a few creased cards making them inoperable in the method.
The R&S method in play is ok. I went over the first few cards on top 6 cards of each side of deck with a rough stick to increase confidence in the intial counting. All of the heat is on the cards as you count so makes me feel a little better about the start of the counting.

Overall, this is brilliant. It’s worth the price for the method alone as that for me is incredible genius. It’s mind blowing how this works!!!

I am a fan of ACAAN and up till this, heavily relied on the Mastermind Deck as it too can play big and gets great reactions. Atomic Deck is now part of my parlor act and I use Mastermind for my strolling set.
Randall
I am a fan of both Craig Petty and Lloyd Barnes. I think they’ve done an amazing job coming up with the Atomic Deck. I don’t think it is the perfect ACAAN, but it comes closer than anything else I’ve seen. I would give this five stars but the cards are a bit fragile. Unfortunately I can’t go into detail without revealing the method but one should be fairly careful handling these cards for fear of ruining your investment.
The effect is fantastic and the use of technology is completely justified. In addition, an alternate handling has been recently introduced that eliminates the need for tech completely. Great job, guys!
Clark
Interesting to see a different approach to ACAAN -- and it is different. I have a whole slew of Craig Petty's magic that I love and use regularly. Would I use this one? No. Why? First, it is dependent on the internet. Second, it won't work with every named card - (some work arounds are given, but who is a fan of work arounds?) Third, I found the explanations, while abundant, were often confusing in places and more 'hype' related than informational. Craig almost always gives clear tutorials. I found this to be the exception to that rule. Will this keep me from purchasing other magic from him?Certainly not. He is one of the best providers of content to the magic community. I just was less than impressed with this offering. (As with all reviews, be aware - your mileage may vary . . .)
Steven
The atomic deck though critically acclaimed is great. The service at Vanishing is superb. Item arrived at my door only a few days after ordering. Love it. Love vanishing.
Robert
I wanna start by saying that the only reason why I didn’t give it excellent rating was because of the fact that the cards are super easy to bend. Other than that, it’s mostly what it promises because of the fact that it’s only 80 to 90% so it’s not 100% as advertised. But saying all that. I ordered a second pack for stage performances and I do wanna say that it is an amazing trick. I have been doing it for people that I know and blowing their minds. I can’t wait to do it on stage. I love Craig Petty‘s ideas and despite what some people think he is a great innovator so thumbs up to the Atomic Deck👍!
Tyler
So hard to handle :( was really hoping for a gem here. Also not bicycle so hard to incorporate into my show.
Martin
I was pretty skeptical about the Atomic Deck after having seen multiple reviews of it, but in the end I decided to give it a chance and was pleasantly surprised. The method is absolutely genius, and is so easy if you use the right patter. The phone usage is a minus for me, but if you introduce it well it doesn't register in the spectator's mind. Overall very good product, super clean effect and incredibly easy to perform.
Scott
Whether your a card mechanic or a hamfisted card fumbler like me, this is well within your wheelhouse. Leaving it all to your presentational skills. I bought two!
Rodolfo
Place this deck out of the tuck case and in the open, untouched, without bringing attention to it. Then, through various methods, your participant or the entire audience is engaged to name a card and a location—uniquely the least common combination of card value and location between 1 and 52—that is freely chosen. Then, and only then, does the magician or mentalist introduce the deck and begin dealing the cards. Miraculously, the participant has named a card and its exact position in the deck. This is the cleanest handling of the Berglas Effect I have ever performed. Additionally, the resources available in Craig Petty's Atomic Deck Facebook group will blow your mind.
Walter
Important note: The video instructions ("Updated_Explanations") contain an error that will tank your performance if you don't correct for it. When they explain what the numbers mean in the percentages, they mention SUBTRACTING something ("minus" as a verb, in Lloyd's parlance); however, the website for the stats has apparently been updated, and you must now ADD that thing mentioned. Please practice solo until comfortable with the tools and site.
Now, for the review part of the review: Superstar creators at work on this project... think "Traveling Wilburys" as a supergroup of classic rock performers. Craig and Lloyd are clever and they have fun talking about this project in the main (2 hour) Explanation video. The other videos linked within the package include Peter Turner "Jam" and many live performances, including Zoom video call performances.
Some of the questions and answers and early reviews mention that a phone is REQUIRED because a website is part of the routine. That may have been originally true, but someone came up with a "crib" that can allow a presentation without a phone or website, and that crib is readily available to purchasers of this product, along with detailed explanations of how to use it. Good job.
I had thought this would be a close-up trick, but in fact, I see myself using this more in Parlor or even Stage settings. Having many audience members will allow for a presentation that I think is ideal, and it's one that Craig has refined in his own way.
This project is quite amazing in many ways; nevertheless, it was released as a bit of a work in (very long) progress, and more refinements are likely from the community. I actually think that is great, but some may not. As others have mentioned, the prop (a Copperhead brand deck of very special cards) is one to handle with care. And as Craig notes in the Explanation, this project is about ONE trick, but it's a banger. Five stars worth of creativity here, but probably fair to say it's a Four-star product.
Jouko
Much has been said about this product already. Still I'd like to comment it from the perspective of an amateur/home magician. I'm a mathematician on my background and find the method/solution absolutely brilliant - almost unbelievable. I would call this effect Any Card At Almost Any Number as you can truly select any card. To overcome the "Almost Any Number" part you need to use your verbal talent (or follow instructions video). And you do not even need this if you involve multiple spectators to take part with their phone. What comes to the videos I've seen better work from Craig. Maybe they were in a hurry to get product out for the Blackpool convention. This might be the reason the crib was also released afterwards and not included inside the product package. The crib you will need if you want to avoid using a mobile phone. Learning to use (=deal) the cards is easy, but as warned on the instruction video you need to handle the deck gently. This is one trick pony but in my opinion the parlor trick of the decade. I would not recommend to do this for one person as there is 20-30 % chance that the "Any Number" is "wrong".
Sean
Not for workers.

Firstly, I've bought a few bits of Craig's stuff before and liked.

Pros.
The quality of the Murphy's box.

Good for a large audience on a stage.

Cons.
Correct it's no roughing spray BUT alternative used here becomes ineffective quickly.

The "hidden extra feature" is no way close to being hidden

If the selected card ends up at position 42 say, you'll have more than 10 cards left to deal and that's really obvious

Magicians will spot the cards a mile off and you can't hand out a card to a punter.

Not only do you need a phone BUT you need internet access. Not for an app.

I performed for 5 or 6 evenings but have decided to stop.

Not good for close up pro work
Dennis
First off, I'm a real newbie to magic, still learning the ropes. I was interested in it due mainly to how Craig presented it and his style of magic - which is really great and works for him. There's a lot of hype for this deck and a lot of controversy about it (lots of folks seem mad that it needs an app or the internet, which they solved, but frankly who cares?). I bought the deck as I have another of Craig Petty's magic deck Focus, which is an amazing simple deck. The method is really pretty cool and interesting and it was worth getting the deck just to know the workings.

This deck does not seem ideal for me as a performer and new to magic - not because of any difficulty in learning the method though that did take some time - but in the actual handling of the cards and in the way you have to get the audience or participant to choose the card and number. There is a vast array of possibilities, but the few times I have tried to present it (after working and practicing it), it did not go well. That has affected my confidence and my presentation, so I will put it aside and try to maybe incorporate it later.

I will also have to say, as someone new to magic, I don't know that audience members think that the ACAN is "the holy grail". I don't think it's as impressive as other effects. Maybe its all the counting, I don't know.
Richard
The Atomic Deck works great, very clean, and extremely easy to do! And since they give you a couple of ways to perform the trick, you can perform the trick to the same audience in a couple of different ways to throw them off on how the trick is done. In most cases, the reset is done for you.
Henry
I take off my magic hat for this exceptional product. What you get here for a little pocket money is more than satisfactory. The technology is very well thought out and you can see that a lot of work has gone into it. I can't complain about the quality of the product. Several hours of tutorials are included and I would have wished for an even better quality, but that's really complaining on a high level.
My conclusion: The product is a must for every ACAAN fanatic. In my opinion the product is given away far too cheaply. 50$ is not enough for what you get here. Above average job Craig
Tom
I am always looking for the "best" (or at least "a better") ACAAN, and when a Ring member shared this at a meeting, I was blown away -- and ordered it the next day. The method is genius. The only drawback that I see is that the trick is done with a very ordered (read that as cannot shuffle) deck that is not a recognizable Bicycle back. But the presentation gets you immediately past that to make it a non-issue. I guess the purest may not like that you consult a chart or an app to get the "odds" of a card being at a particular location (which is arguably always 1:52), but the presentation again is so strong, that I have not had an issue with that either. So those two shortcomings are not shortcomings to me at all. The online instructions make everything so easy to learn. The cards are fantastic, and again the method is diabolically brilliant. There is a good chance that you will end up buying more than one of these...it's that good, and you will want to be able to do it for years and years.
Bill
this was great
Benoit
Was influenced by all the hype surrounding the pack. Heard all and saw all about it. It is a good trick. Not difficult.
Josh
While I agree that it is pretty clever, the handling is awkward, and some numbers require extra work that can seem suspicious. It’s also no bicycled back. I like many of Craig’s products, but this one just misses the mark.
Chris
As a hobbiest, this deck is a great addition to my repertoire. As always, Craig Petty and Lloyd Barnes are fabulous to watch as they teach you their approach to expanding your routine with their latest creation. It is truly one of the best ACAANs out there. Hits 100% of the time and no crazy math. Tons of great options, flexible and easy to use. The only bummer is that the deck itself is not available in a non-gimmicked version for a deck switch but honestly it's not necessary as most spectators would not notice any differences.

Have a question about this product? It's possible others do too. Ask here and other Vanishing Inc. Magic customers will be able to respond with assistance! Alternatively, email us and we can help too.

  • Adrian asks: Is it true that this isn't actually ANY card at ANY number? If so, it would be very fair to future customers to point this out very clearly in the description.

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds:Please email us at wizards@vanishingincmagic.com and we can discuss this with you
  • Stefan asks: Do I need a phone or can I perform the sane effect without a phone like in the video.

    • 1. Adrian responds:In the video the phone is outside the camera. Seems pretty misleading.
    • 2. WILLIAM responds:Phone makes it easier, but Lloyd Barnes just released a crib in his youtube channel for performances with no cell phone.
  • Joe asks: Does the notepad input work with a android phone?

    • 1. Josh responds:Yes it does
  • Joe asks: Does the note pad performance work for a android phone?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds:Yes
  • Martin asks: Do you sell regular decks of the same kind for a deck switch ?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds:We do not.
  • Ariel asks: If for any reason, the cards go out of order is there a place that has a listing of what the correct order is so they can be reset?

    • 1. Devin responds:Yes, the cards are marked with their numbered position in case the cards are dropped or otherwise arranged out of order.
    • 2. Rick responds:Yes. I just found it. It's in the upper left corner of the card.
  • Richard asks: Rick's question is a good one. Not only could I not find any CONCISE directions in the over 6 1/2 hours of video, I could find neither the ordering of the cards nor a link to the website critical to the performance of the trick. Could you PLEASE tell us EXACTLY where we can find this CRITICAL information on the laughably lengthy, yet evasively vague "explanatory" videos?

    • 1. Richard responds:(It seems "Rick's question" has disappeared. He asked about where he could find the order of the stack.)
    • 2. Johnny responds:The cards are all numbered so you can get them back into order if need be. The website is given by Lloyd in the section "How it Works" listed in the menu. Specifically at 1:09:10 Lloyd gives it and it is then shown fully on screen.
    • 3. Richard responds:Thank you Johnny!
  • Mike asks: I have watched so many demos or this and read so many post, However Im not finding much about the Notepad input...is that an app or web based page? Is it available for Android phones

    • 1. Dan responds:It was originally going to be an iOS native app but they had issues with that and have released it as a web app which will work on all phones
    • 2. Dave responds:Notepad input works very well and how to install and use it is covered in the video downloads when you buy the deck.
  • Mike asks: Hi, Thanks for the earlier reply re the Copperhead Decks, Craig. I am still a little unclear on the 'phone issue'. If the spectator uses their phone would I still need to be carrying my phone as well? Thanks.

    • 1. Sean responds:No. You do not need your phone if the spectator has theirs.
  • Gary asks: Would like it to come in Jumbo Index as seems best performance is for groups. - Is this planned in future?

    • 1. Sean responds:Odds are no and for a good reason.
