After years of using it to fool magic’s brightest minds, Craig Petty has finally released his groundbreaking solution to one of magic’s most iconic challenges.
Since being first introduced by David Berglas in the 1950s, the concept of a perfect Any Card at Any Number (ACAAN) has fascinated and perplexed magicians. Also known as The Berglas Effect, this holy grail of magic is where a freely-named card is shown to reside at a freely-named number in a deck of cards. They say a card. They say a number. And, with no tricky moves, that card is shown to be at that number in a deck of cards.
While the effect is simple to describe, creating a viable method has been a challenge countless magicians have attempted to conquer. While some have been quite successful, it often come with some sort of caveat that strays away from the simplicity that makes Berglas-style effects so fascinating.
Then, in early 2021, Craig Petty made a novel discovery that allows any magician to perform a routine that is about as close to the legendary Berglas Effect as we've ever seen on a mainstream level. Most importantly though, its not some convoluted impractical solution. This is an easy-to-do, incredibly fooling routine that works every time.
The Atomic Deck Effect at a Glance
A deck is openly on the table and everyone is asked to think of a card and any number they’d like. There are no forces and they can change their mind as many times as they want. They even double down to ensure they avoid commonly selected cards and numbers. Once everyone is satisfied, you invite them to watch intently as you slowly and deliberately pick up the deck and start dealing. You place cards on the table one by one until the freely chosen number is reached. That card is turned over and revealed to be a perfect match.
Their card. Their number. Every single time.
"That's better than any version of Any Card at Any Number that I've ever done... That genuinely is the cleanest version of Any Card At Any Number that I've ever seen in my life." Peter Turner
Note: Although a phone-less option is possible, the easiest method does use a borrowed phone for the effect.

Here is what legendary Mentalist Marc Paul, who was a friend and student of David Berglas and performed one of the most perfect ACAANs ever seen on national television had to say about “Atomic Deck”: "That is the Berglas effect... You've cracked it. This is every magician's dream... It's the closest version to The Holy Grail that I've seen anyone do."
Everything You Need to Know
While this might seem like real magic to people you perform for, we feel obligated to let you know that it is still a magic trick. So, yes, there is a method required. But, once you see how effortlessly the method, presentation, and gimmicks work together, it will feel like real magic.
“The Atomic Deck” comes with a specially-designed deck of cards that does 90% of the work for you. It’s a truly innovative creation that took years to create.
If you own Craig’s other projects, you likely assumed there was some sort of roughing element like a spray, stick, or powder. But, it's actually way more clever than that. Craig has sourced special decks with a revolutionary stock that helps facilitate the method without any roughing chemicals at all.
Just like as seen in the trailer, you really can let non-magicians look through the “Atomic Deck” pretty openly. Even if they examine it, laypeople won't notice a thing. These cards will also last you just as long as a normal deck of cards because there is nothing that will rub or off or wear away with use.
As far as other magicians go, they're going to be fooled. In fact, they'll be that type of fooled that makes them a little angry. You won't be able to let them inspect the deck closely though. If a magician gets their hands on the cards for long enough, they'll be able to recognize something is up.
In our opinion, the fact magicians can't inspect the cards is an extremely minor drawback, and worth the trade-off that it allows "Atomic Deck" to be done with no sleight of hand. If you can deal cards. You can perform this. It really is that easy.
There’s also no mental math. Yes, there are some pretty crazy mathematics that happen behind the scenes to make this work, but you don’t have to worry about any of that because your phone (or their phone) does all the hard work for you. While using a custom-made, genuine-looking statistics webpage, they'll unknowingly give you all the information you need.
This is so natural and organic, it really doesn’t even feel like part of the trick. In fact, they technically don’t even need to say their card and/or number out loud before you start dealing.
Not a fan of using a phone during your act? Don’t worry. Multiple additional methods are taught that allow you to perform “Atomic Deck” with seemingly no phone in play.
Everything is explained in the comprehensive tutorial video. As you’ve come to expect from Craig Petty, no stone is left unturned. You’ll learn every detail needed to start frying brains with “Atomic Deck”, as well as tons of variations and bonus content that ensure you can squeeze every drop of astonishment out of “The Atomic Deck”.
Customer reviews for Atomic Deck
The trick revolves around using a phone and a website. That doesn't come across at all in the video I saw.
It's a bit of a miracle for magicians, but not for spectators. Some good engineering here, but it's not the source of wonder it appears to be.
I'd return it if I could.
atomicnotes.netlify.app is the notes website
Covert.unistats.org is the covert input
The reviewers on here (and elsewhere, I'm sure) that are complaining about the tutorial and feeling mislead by the trailer need to get a life. The tutorial is incredible. The negative comments about the tutorial not getting to the point immediately are not valid. What the heck is wrong with the tutorial taking its time getting to the explanation? And it's not like there isn't a timestamp screen at the start, telling you where each section starts. So to give Atomic Deck a bad review because of this is totally not fair.
This deck and this effect KILLS. Revolutionary in design, insane in concept, and brilliant in execution.
Craig, Lloyd, Josh, Rich, and the entire team at Murphy's: CONGRATULATIONS on this one! I'm thrilled to own THREE (I wanted backups just in case AND I wanted one of those tickets!)

OK, so I went to the TWO HOUR long full explanation video. I didn't watch the whole thing, but after over an hour of spot searching, I couldn’t find the essentials — the URL of the website and how to use the information outlined in the “6 Minute Explanation.” Thanks to the VI community, I found the necessary info (it begins 1h07m into the LONG explanation video), but even then, the trick is revealed in dialogue rather than taught directly to you, so you don’t feel like the student, you feel like you’re auditing a discussion between two people who already know what you have yet to learn. Frankly, I can’t imagine a more inefficient way of imparting knowledge. There’s not really that much to know, but it takes FOREVER to hit all the bullet points. Take notes.
Craig Petty’s videos are all profusely verbose. The tricks are clever, brilliant even, but when what you need to know is buried within HOURS of perhaps interesting, but unnecessary blather, the ratio of those who take the time to learn the trick to those who have purchased it must be minuscule.
5 stars for the trick. 1 star for the videos.
The video advertisement is quite deceptive, purposely hiding the fact that a website MUST be used for this trick
The explanation video goes on and on and on about what a great routine this is, without explaining the method.
I will be suspicious of both Murphy Magic & Craig Petty in the future. Although I love several Petty items, this one, although clever & innovative, is not going to be a crowd pleaser. There is nothing worse than boring magic & this routine requires a lenghly explanation of the website as well as often dealing a ton of cards. These two requirements make it unworthy of performance for me. I'll try it out on some audiences before I sell it, but I suspect it will be up for sale at the upcoming swap meet in APRIL.
Let me expand. The packaging, the video tutorials wonderful. The cards themselves come in below what I would feel comfortable using.
If you have a style like that of Craig, I do believe this trick will workout great for you. For me and my personal style, it just isn't going to work as I'd hope. There are other ACAAN I can do.
On a positive note, the thinking and the method that went into this. Amazing! That in and of itself is worth the price of admission so to say. You get to see a glimpse into how Craig and those involved thought about this and that is valuable within itself. If you're not interested in learning how this is done and expanding you magical knowledge, then this isn't the trick for you.
If, however, you're curios on how they did this and the other tidbits you'll pick up from listening to three masters (Craig, Lloyd, and Peter Turner) then pick this up.
I think this can play well for some. For others not so much. I think in certain situations it will play well and others not so much. That'll be up to you to decide where it fits or doesn't fit into your act.
All in all though, it's a really cool trick and way they made it happen, but as for something that would work for me, not so much.
This is now my #1 EDC and I have purchased a second copy in case it becomes unavailable in the future.
As a worker, this for me is not a close up effect I will use that much or maybe just to close a set for a VIP etc. I have done this so far in parlor shows. One of the main strengths of this card effect that nobody is talking about is how it plays big! You can have your entire audience on their phone on the website at the same time then work the effect from there. Super engaging for the audience. Big win for parlor use.
Cards are super thin and have to be for this. They must be handled with care. Even a fumble with them can land you with a few creased cards making them inoperable in the method.
The R&S method in play is ok. I went over the first few cards on top 6 cards of each side of deck with a rough stick to increase confidence in the intial counting. All of the heat is on the cards as you count so makes me feel a little better about the start of the counting.
Overall, this is brilliant. It’s worth the price for the method alone as that for me is incredible genius. It’s mind blowing how this works!!!
I am a fan of ACAAN and up till this, heavily relied on the Mastermind Deck as it too can play big and gets great reactions. Atomic Deck is now part of my parlor act and I use Mastermind for my strolling set.
The effect is fantastic and the use of technology is completely justified. In addition, an alternate handling has been recently introduced that eliminates the need for tech completely. Great job, guys!
Now, for the review part of the review: Superstar creators at work on this project... think "Traveling Wilburys" as a supergroup of classic rock performers. Craig and Lloyd are clever and they have fun talking about this project in the main (2 hour) Explanation video. The other videos linked within the package include Peter Turner "Jam" and many live performances, including Zoom video call performances.
Some of the questions and answers and early reviews mention that a phone is REQUIRED because a website is part of the routine. That may have been originally true, but someone came up with a "crib" that can allow a presentation without a phone or website, and that crib is readily available to purchasers of this product, along with detailed explanations of how to use it. Good job.
I had thought this would be a close-up trick, but in fact, I see myself using this more in Parlor or even Stage settings. Having many audience members will allow for a presentation that I think is ideal, and it's one that Craig has refined in his own way.
This project is quite amazing in many ways; nevertheless, it was released as a bit of a work in (very long) progress, and more refinements are likely from the community. I actually think that is great, but some may not. As others have mentioned, the prop (a Copperhead brand deck of very special cards) is one to handle with care. And as Craig notes in the Explanation, this project is about ONE trick, but it's a banger. Five stars worth of creativity here, but probably fair to say it's a Four-star product.
Firstly, I've bought a few bits of Craig's stuff before and liked.
Pros.
The quality of the Murphy's box.
Good for a large audience on a stage.
Cons.
Correct it's no roughing spray BUT alternative used here becomes ineffective quickly.
The "hidden extra feature" is no way close to being hidden
If the selected card ends up at position 42 say, you'll have more than 10 cards left to deal and that's really obvious
Magicians will spot the cards a mile off and you can't hand out a card to a punter.
Not only do you need a phone BUT you need internet access. Not for an app.
I performed for 5 or 6 evenings but have decided to stop.
Not good for close up pro work
This deck does not seem ideal for me as a performer and new to magic - not because of any difficulty in learning the method though that did take some time - but in the actual handling of the cards and in the way you have to get the audience or participant to choose the card and number. There is a vast array of possibilities, but the few times I have tried to present it (after working and practicing it), it did not go well. That has affected my confidence and my presentation, so I will put it aside and try to maybe incorporate it later.
I will also have to say, as someone new to magic, I don't know that audience members think that the ACAN is "the holy grail". I don't think it's as impressive as other effects. Maybe its all the counting, I don't know.
My conclusion: The product is a must for every ACAAN fanatic. In my opinion the product is given away far too cheaply. 50$ is not enough for what you get here. Above average job Craig
Community questions about Atomic Deck
Have a question about this product? It's possible others do too. Ask here and other Vanishing Inc. Magic customers will be able to respond with assistance! Alternatively, email us and we can help too.
Adrian asks: Is it true that this isn't actually ANY card at ANY number? If so, it would be very fair to future customers to point this out very clearly in the description.
- 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds:Please email us at wizards@vanishingincmagic.com and we can discuss this with you
Stefan asks: Do I need a phone or can I perform the sane effect without a phone like in the video.
- 1. Adrian responds:In the video the phone is outside the camera. Seems pretty misleading.
- 2. WILLIAM responds:Phone makes it easier, but Lloyd Barnes just released a crib in his youtube channel for performances with no cell phone.
Joe asks: Does the notepad input work with a android phone?
- 1. Josh responds:Yes it does
Joe asks: Does the note pad performance work for a android phone?
- 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds:Yes
Martin asks: Do you sell regular decks of the same kind for a deck switch ?
- 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds:We do not.
Ariel asks: If for any reason, the cards go out of order is there a place that has a listing of what the correct order is so they can be reset?
- 1. Devin responds:Yes, the cards are marked with their numbered position in case the cards are dropped or otherwise arranged out of order.
- 2. Rick responds:Yes. I just found it. It's in the upper left corner of the card.
Richard asks: Rick's question is a good one. Not only could I not find any CONCISE directions in the over 6 1/2 hours of video, I could find neither the ordering of the cards nor a link to the website critical to the performance of the trick. Could you PLEASE tell us EXACTLY where we can find this CRITICAL information on the laughably lengthy, yet evasively vague "explanatory" videos?
- 1. Richard responds:(It seems "Rick's question" has disappeared. He asked about where he could find the order of the stack.)
- 2. Johnny responds:The cards are all numbered so you can get them back into order if need be. The website is given by Lloyd in the section "How it Works" listed in the menu. Specifically at 1:09:10 Lloyd gives it and it is then shown fully on screen.
- 3. Richard responds:Thank you Johnny!
Mike asks: I have watched so many demos or this and read so many post, However Im not finding much about the Notepad input...is that an app or web based page? Is it available for Android phones
- 1. Dan responds:It was originally going to be an iOS native app but they had issues with that and have released it as a web app which will work on all phones
- 2. Dave responds:Notepad input works very well and how to install and use it is covered in the video downloads when you buy the deck.
Mike asks: Hi, Thanks for the earlier reply re the Copperhead Decks, Craig. I am still a little unclear on the 'phone issue'. If the spectator uses their phone would I still need to be carrying my phone as well? Thanks.
- 1. Sean responds:No. You do not need your phone if the spectator has theirs.
Gary asks: Would like it to come in Jumbo Index as seems best performance is for groups. - Is this planned in future?
- 1. Sean responds:Odds are no and for a good reason.
