The Coincidenc3

Elías D’Sastre's "The Coincidenc3" is the ultimate coincidence routine. Now it can be yours.
"The Coincidenc3" by Elías D’Sastre has quietly fooled some of the best magicians globally. Many of those who've seen it have said it's the best coincidence effect they've ever seen. But what if we told you it was also almost automatic, easy enough to learn in a few minutes, performable in almost any situation, and the reset is instant, and can be done in full view of your audience?
Here's what happens:
The magician has one deck and the participant another, each with different backs. Both decks are shown, faces and backs, and shuffled independently. Both you and your participant start dealing cards face-up on the table. At any point, the participant can stop dealing, swap their next card with yours, and deal that card face down. This is done a total of three times.
Fairly and cleanly, the magician spreads both decks face-up, and three cards with matching backs are clearly visible. When the spreads are turned over, those three face-down cards match perfectly!
It's that clean. It’s that simple. It’s that powerful. And it resets instantly! All you have to do is swap the cards back. You can even perform it with a borrowed deck, as long as it has standard faces.
As a bonus, you’ll also receive two additional routines:
- Coincidencia (José Antonio Alba) – a routine developed nearly 15 years ago in Córdoba.
- Open Loose Prediction – another stunning effect that has fooled magicians worldwide.

Well done, Conidicenc3 appears freer and cleaner, but at a cost. The deck is gaffed using my least favorite card gimmickry (potential reliability problems) and the handling requires conscientious practice to achieve a feeling and appearance of normalcy. Though this version will confuse, if not fool, magicians, the Scarne version, even with its presentational limitations, sacrifices little to achieve the same effect. My untested hypothesis here is that the Scarne version would create the same sense of awe for the lay spectator as Coincidenc3 with the advantages of ease of handling and ungimmicked decks.
The instructional video is not downloadable. The instruction is in non-native English and the presentation is unscripted, with all that that connotes. When I saw what I was getting into, I took bullet-pointed notes and learned from them rather than the potentially confusing video.
For me, Coincidenc3 is a triumph of method over effect. The application of the gimmickry is imaginative and clever, but for me, the juice just isn’t worth the squeeze.
There’s a lot of VERY clever magic out there these days that gilds already resplendent lilies. This, though far from the most flagrant example, is one of them. Coincidenc3 is a convincing version of a great classic effect. I won’t be doing this for the laity, but I’ll work on it as a study in creative thinking. Not my thing, but it might well be yours.
