Family Man

Family Man
Just like how Principia blended Harapan's love of physics with his love of magic, Family Man provides a glimpse into Harapan's life as he explores the powerful and meaningful crossroads between the art he loves and the family he cherishes.
In this personal and powerful book, Harapan reveals how the fear of losing his magic to the beautiful responsibilities of fatherhood became the very fuel for a new wave of creativity. Dedicated to his two daughters, Trixie and Wanda, the book’s structure mirrors his life. Each routine begins with a solid foundation (“The Main Trix”) and expands into inspired possibilities (“Wanda Out Loud”).
Inside Family Man, you will discover:
- Expert Card Routines: A signature blend of elegant sleight-of-hand, clever gaffs, and mathematical whimsy. Produce Aces from a shuffled deck in stunning fashion, make faces print on double-backed cards, cause cards to vanish and travel to the card box, and perform a prediction effect with an unexpectedly clever punchline that Harapan personally uses in his formal close-up shows.
- Deeply Personal Essays: The heartfelt foreword and epilogue detail the full story behind the dramatic loss that birthed Principia and the new, powerful fear currently driving Harapan's magic forward. It’s a story that every creative will understand and relate to.
Family Man is Harapan's most personal work yet. It is a testament to the idea that our deepest fears can be transformed into our most authentic art. It’s a book about love, loss, fatherhood, and the relentless urge to create.
If you are a magician who found a kindred spirit in the elegant thinking of Principia, you will find its heart here.
If you are a performer who believes the truest magic lives in the story around it, you will find a powerful narrative to connect with.
And if you are simply a person trying to navigate the beautiful, impossible balance between what you love to do and who you need to be for others, Harapan Ong wrote this book for you.

Rob asks: I saw Off by 4! in Genii and love it. But where does one find a 25 of hearts gaff?
Peow Yeong asks: Any need for specific gaff cards to perform the tricks?
- 1. Jim responds:Some DF and some DB, plus a 25 of Hearts. One routine uses a WOW gimmick.
Peter asks: It’s frustrating to see this advertised in its banner headline as a BOOK and then find in the add copy its description change to BOOKLET. Vanishing Inc should be better than this. What is the book or booklet’s dimensions? and how many pages (printed, not end pages!) does it contain? It’s a pity one has to ask these questions.
- 1. Harapan (creator) responds:Hi Peter! Harapan here. It is a paperback book(let?) with 80 pages. It is A5 in size. I am not sure what the line differentiating a book and a booklet is... so I apologize for that. Using Google Gemini, I get this: A book is a bound publication with a high page count, often featuring hardcover or thick paper, designed for in-depth reading. A booklet is a small, thin, paper-covered publication (usually 36 pages or fewer) designed for concise information, such as brochures or manuals. Booklets are typically saddle-stitched, while books use stronger binding. Family Man is definitely not saddle stitched - it is adhesive bound. So I guess dimensions-wise it is small, but pages-wise and binding wise it is quite substantial! I hope that helps.
Bill asks: Hardback ?
- 1. Harapan (creator) responds:Harapan here. Paperback!
Stephane asks: how many pages ? book or booklet ?
- 1. Ted responds:At the very bottom of the listing, below the contents box, I see: "Paperback, 80 pages".
