If you know anything about card magic, you know the name Ed Marlo. One of the most prolific creators in the history of our art, Marlo’s influence is undeniable. If you have performed a card trick, you are likely performing something that Marlo’s influence has touched.

His Marlo’s Magazines is a series of six large hardback books that represent the very best of his card magic, spanning over 2,000 pages. We have worked tirelessly to reproduce these legendary publications in a gorgeous new slipcase edition.

During the 1970s and 80s, Marlo grew tired of other magic publishers taking a long time to release his work, and so he embarked on the most ambitious project of his career: a series of six self-published “magazines” containing his very best work. He jokingly called them magazines, but they were actually books, each containing between 325 and 500 pages. The material features in-depth examinations of techniques such as card-to-pocket, the Punch Deal, Marlo’s Convincing Control, and effects like Ace Assemblies and Oil and Water. But that’s just the start — each magazine is filled with at least 200 moves, techniques, and effects. It’s where techniques like the Snap Change, Olram’s Jinx Switch, Unit Upjog Control, and more were first published, but that’s just the start — the scope of these books is so wide that every time you open them, you’ll be introduced to something new.

Due to their scarcity and the exceptional quality of the magic within them, these books have been hoarded, whispered about, and sought after for decades. Every volume of the original release was hand-numbered by Marlo, and only 300 of each were ever printed. Signed first editions now command $350+ on the collectors’ market, and with fewer sets remaining in fine condition each year, values have risen steadily.

But at Vanishing Inc., we believe that magic should be studied and not hoarded. Every book has been thoroughly edited (and corrected with notes from Marlo’s personal copies of the originals), all of the thousands of illustrations have been digitally remastered, and every page has been redesigned to showcase Marlo’s brilliance and to make the material easier to study than ever before. This is the definitive edition. Nothing else comes close.

Expert Tuition with Every Copy
Studying such a massive collection is likely incredibly daunting, but Marlo expert and Vanishing Inc. cofounder Andi Gladwin is here to help you along the way. Upon purchasing the book, you’ll immediately receive access to a video of Andi discussing how best to tackle these volumes. And then, over the next year, he’ll be hosting six online sessions; each introducing you to a prominent Marlo student and dissecting the very best material from each issue.

Two Versions — Each One Deluxe
We’ve produced the books in two stunning editions. The “standard” edition is anything but standard. It contains six oversized hardcover books, carefully designed to sit flat while you read. Presented in a durable slipcase, housed inside a premium shipping box. This is “standard” in name only.

The deluxe edition (now sold out) is strictly limited to 100 numbered sets. This means that all six books will share your unique numbering. Bound in custom leatherette, these books contain the same extraordinary content, but with a finish and feel collectors will treasure. These will never be reprinted.

After years in the making and with the kind support of Lee Freed (who was entrusted with the rights to the magazines), these books are now finally available, beautifully reproduced, carefully edited, and designed to be studied. What’s more, they’re available at less than the cost of just one of the six first editions. These Marlo’s Magazines are not just magic books. They are a lifetime of study. A legacy. And your next great adventure in card magic.

I'm totally blown away with this project! Marlo would be smiling from ear to ear. Beautiful production and layout. Every card magician needs these! Thank you Vanishing Inc. Bill Malone

I know you will be very happy with your investment in these books. Andi Gladwin has done a remarkable job over the last few years preparing this for publication. It has my highest recommendation. I say this as a lover of card magic, a student of the real work and with deep admiration for Ed Marlo. Michael Vincent

Customer reviews for Marlo's Magazines (6 Volume Set)

Duane
Very cool intro video from Andi! Looking forward to receiving the books and spending time with them and seeing if I can get even a little of the enjoyment out of them that others hopefully will too!
I don't always interpret the written word well in my brain so maybe these sessions the will be presented are something that is going to help get the ideas across so that I understand them as they are supposed to be.
Kevin
Great Intro!

Obviously I haven’t had a chance to work through these books yet, but what an absolutely beautiful tribute to Marlo and his work. I wasn’t sure if I would ever have the privilege of reading the Marlo Magazines due to the incredible prices they command on the second hand market, so this is such a lovely and welcome opportunity. This was clearly a labor of love by Andi and the VI team, and I’m looking forward to nerding out in the Zoom sessions. The introduction video was a really nice touch and helped calm the sense of overwhelm I felt when first seeing the boxed set (it’s massive). This is a genuinely beautiful project and clearly the work of a diverse group of people that love magic. Thank you all so much for putting this together!

I've been searching for decades for these 'magazines'. I was able to find Vol. 2 some time ago on ebay for a couple hundred dollars. Some time later I found another volume on ebay and was out bid by a couple hundred dollars.

When I got wind the entire set was available at Vanishing Inc. I jumped on it!

Delivery from Vanishing Inc. was fast...I mean really fast. When it arrived the box was heavy (of course there are six hardback volumes). What surprised me was when I opened the shipping box, I found another box. I slid that box out of the shipping box and when I opened it, I found another box!!! It reminded me of the gozinta boxes :-).

Thanks Vanishing Inc. for such careful and protective packaging for these magnificent volumes.

The third box is the actual container for the set and it is elegant. The six volumes are nestled inside an excellent and very sturdy slipcase. The volumes themselves are incredible, so much better than the original spiral bound paperback volumes.

If the price is an issue, remember when I wrote I obtained a copy for a couple hundred dollars? That was 15 to 20-ish years ago and when I found another volume on ebay, I was outbid by a couple hundred dollars. This set is a steal and If you're an Ed Marlo fan, this set is a must.

There are very few moments in a magicians life when something truly changes the course of your magic. For me the Marlo Magazines is one of those moments. They’ve brought a legend’s work back to life. This isn’t just a reprint. It’s the heartbeat of card sleight of hand now passed on to a upcoming generation. These books they’re a living dialogue with one of the most creative minds in the history of magic Ed Marlo. Every sleight, every routine, every note reminds you of what it really means to be a serious practitioner of card magic. They’re meant to be studied. Dissected.
Thank you, Vanishing Inc. You did not just bring back a piece of magic history. You honored it. You made it available to all of us. Thanks

The Marlo Magazines aren’t optional. They’re essential. If you’re serious about card magic—really serious—you owe it to yourself to dive in.

I love the paper stock. It reminds me of the paper used for the older magic books (think the Kaufman books or the Paul Harris Art of Astonishment books). I also love the way the paper was cut to stay flat when the book is open.

I don't know why so many modern magic books are printed on glossy paper. It makes it harder to read at night as the glare can be too much.

Andi Gladwin you should make this your default paper for future publications.
James
Just a beautiful set of books…. I like the slip case over a dust jacket any day!
Todd
This 6 volume set is one of the best, and rewarding purchases I have made in quite some time. These tomes are nothing short of excellence in construction and design, not to mention you are receiving material from one of the VERY best minds on card magic!

. . . . . May Edward Marlo always be remembered! These volumes assist in accomplishing just that; so much great material!

A sincere Thank You, Vanishing inc.!
Richard
There are few better cures for insomnia than reading through Marlo's multitudinous methods for multifarious manipulations. The eyes glaze over. Marlo has always been a last resort for me. Learn a sleight, master it, then go see what Marlo has to say about it. I'm not working my way through these volumes, but I have found in volume 5 alone useful tweaks to the handling I've been using for the Marlo Convincing Control as well as a MUCH better bottom palm than the one I've been using for decades. In that volume alone, I have found MANY topics I'm eager to explore in the hopes of, if not learning something new, at least refining what I already know.

Though there's a lot of minutia for the perfectionist, there are MANY topics of general interest to anyone with a basic repertoire of and interest in sleight-of-hand card magic. You cannot help but find lots of tweaks and suggestions that will improve what you already do as well as interest-piquing asides that will lead you into unexplored territory.

As a collector, buying this set was a no-brainer. Having bought them, they're being put far more use than I had anticipated. Essential.

First off let me say I love the paper stock and the way that the book lies open, it makes such a huge difference when learning from the book. The book set is beautifully produced. I started with volume 5 and the convincing control. It describes a lot of methods. Also learnt a great bottom palm which is very useful. I am really enjoying these books, you have to spend some time with them to extract value as not everything appeals. This was a huge investment but to be honest this is great value. Highly recommend this.
Luca
This is without a doubt the project that will stay in the history of magic. Andy took many years to compile the Marlo’s Magazines in a way that is easy to comprehend and in this elegant format. This is a must have for magicians of all levels!
Skye
These are gorgeous books capturing more sleight of hand card material than you could ever hope to learn in your lifetime, let alone use. Ed Marlo is one of card magic's most formative figures and these impressive books, lavishly reimagined by Vanishing Inc, are a fitting capture of his legacy. Essential.
Kelly
A very impressive set of books, nicely bound and typeset, and priced reasonably. Highly recommend Marlo's Magazines as a great resource to have in your magic library.

Obviously I haven't read all 2250 pages yet, but I've browsed through it all and and read all of the parts that concern me. My overall verdict is that this is a five-star product but not in the same sense as, say, Asi Wind's Repertoire. Make no mistake: Marlo's writing is extremely dry and very difficult (you have been warned), but the books contain everything you'd want. The true value of these books is not just the amount of material, but also that since these were written late into Marlo's career, a lot of the technique descriptions are the most refined and updated versions Marlo came up with. Finally, I have summarised all of the contents of all six books here so you get an idea on what they contain: Volume 1: Secret moves: switches, deals. KM Move: card switches. Succession Aces: ace tricks Dissertation on Oil & Water. Plot effects: Triumphs, sandwich tricks, motel mystery tricks. Old Business: transfers, controls, peeks. Marlo Card Secrets Volume 2: Cannibals: Cannibal cards. Popular Effects with Marlo's Golden Touch. The Spell of the Cards: spelling effects. Marlo on the Pass: passes. Secret Moves: sleights. Plot effects: colour changes, vanishes. Finishing Touch: Miscellaneous moves and effects. Volume 3: Aces Assemblies with a New Finesse: ace tricks. Secret Moves: controls, deals, counts. New Revolutionary Chapters: visual changes, deck switches. Same Plot, Only One Step Further: oil and water, stapled cards, vanishes. Old Business Updated: pushoffs, double turnovers, switches. Direct Approaches to Effects: theory, stacks, miscellaneous stuff. Bonus: a few miscellaneous things. Volume 4: Marlo Punch Deal: marked (clipped) cards. The Card to Case: No-palm methods followed by palm/sleight methods. Double Undercut Palm: Double undercut palms, center steal, top palm. Palmartistry: palm replacements. The Fingertip Steal: fingertip steal. The Marlo Card Clip: colour changes, vanishes, switches. False Counts: false counts, flexible combination counts, Marfoe counts, OPEC. Touchdown Reverse: Turndown reverses. The Pass: tabled cuts, combination pass. Marlo's Havana Deals: Havana deals, one hand bottom deal. Combination Card/Packet/Deck Switches: mostly switches, but also a torn and restored card. Dissertation on Slip Cut: slip cuts. Audience Tested Plot effects: Poker routines, card through knee, ace trick. The Key Move. O.K. - Let's Play: games, Olram subtleties, Cricket count. Ace Effects: ace tricks. Volume 5: Further Adventures of the Punch: more punch deals. On Karl Fulves' Shuffle Off. Shuffle Sorcery: All things related to shuffling. Slick Sorcery: routines, stacking. On the Spread Cull. New Approach Convincing Controls: Convincing Control variations. New Palms: top palms, bottom palms, and anything in between. New Side Steals. Ace Substitutions: add-ons, switches. Ace Productions. Crimp Conjuring. Refined Ace Cutting: crimps and nicks. The - of - Trick: Ace of Spades tricks, Spectator Ace Cutting tricks. Passes - Tabled and Otherwise. Sophisticated Simplex Multiple Shift. More Card Switches. On Card to Wallet. Thisa 'N Thata: Olram, miscellaneous. Bonus Section: dribble controls, open predictions, miscellaneous. Volume 6: Slip Deal. Card to Pocket Techniques. Card to Pocket Routines. Latest Riffle Shuffle Systems: culls, stacks. Tabled Suffles & Cuts: strip-out shuffles, false cuts, culls, crimps. Various Tricks. More ideas: I.F. control, In the Same Place (9 variations), miscellaneous. Undiscovered Possibilities: Signature transfer (9 variations), misc. Triumphs & More: miscellaneous routines. Marlo's Routines: routines, fingertip controls. Marlo on the Classics: miscellaneous routines

I think anyone who is a fan of Marlo knows that the original Marlo magazines were a pain in the butt to find, let alone costing over one, two or three hundred dollars a piece. The price they offer here is nothing compared to buying all the originals, you just don't get Marlo's signature and the old crappy plastic binding. Here, the binding is stitch sewn, with ribbon markers and acid free paper.
Peter
Great, Andi and Michael! Your explanations, additional ideas, and tips from your own studies of Marlo's material really helped me feel closer to Marlo. Michael went above and beyond with the material he shared, and his passion for this work truly shines through.
Jon
Awesome work Andi putting everything together and huge thanks to Mike Vincent for sharing so much insight into his knowledge of Marlo's work. Lots to work on...
Claudio
there is not much to say, it was just excellent.
Martin
I was lucky to get the deluxe version. They look gorgeous. Thank you VI for making the Marlos Magazines available for everyone. A true must have for every serious magician.
Walter
Hyperbole Alert! The kinds of descriptors many use in run-of-the-mill product reviews ACTUALLY apply to this product. The 6-volume set of "Marlo's Magazine" represent a colossal achievement by the team that assembled them into this phenomenally well-produced & presented & packaged set. Way to go, Andi et al. This is truly a treasure trove. Several have noted that Marlo's writing style can be described as "dry." Fair enough. It's also shockingly accurate, however, as I have heard, "Whatever clever advancement you imagine you've made, it's likely that Marlo got there first." Highest recommendation for this bargain called "Marlo's Magazine (6-Volume Set)."
John
The best introduction to Marlo I've ever seen Andy. I've been hooked and sold on Marlo since Jon Racherbaumer's first Card finesse book. Amongst other things I have 3 volumes of the magazine in my library that I purchased direct from Marlo. (1, 4 and 5). I was sad that it looked as if I'd never get the chance to read the rest because of the cost. Thank Andy for all the amazing work you've done. This set is magnificent, really something to get to grips and have fun with. I'm pleased about the original covers, forwords etc. so many reprints leave this sort of thing out. Even the Magic Inc ones and they're important to me! I'm 65 years old now but I turned into a small child opening my parcel and holding these books. Thank you again Andy.
Mitchal
Wow! This is quite simply a beautiful thing. The books are beautiful, both inside and out. Even the case has beautiful artwork on the back where it'll hardly ever be seen.

Now, let's talk about the shipping box. The books and case arrived in a set of nested boxes to protect the library during shipping, and it's the best I've ever seen from any company whatsoever! And the artwork on these boxes (that we'll just toss out) is above and beyond what's expected.

Content: That's a little tougher for me as a one-year beginner. I'm not quite ready for even the first few chapters (although they do help me understand what I'm seeing magicians do on YouTube). I'll spend more time with these books in the future. If you're serious like me, you'd better get these now before the edition is gone.
Yoann
I haven’t even received the Marlo Magazines yet, but the video content alone already made this purchase special.

Being able to learn from Michael Vincent and Andi Gladwin was a real pleasure – both are incredibly clear, elegant and generous in the way they teach. You feel their passion for Marlo and for magic in every detail.

Thank you, Vanishing Inc, for this level of pedagogy and care.

Thanks so much and for making my Marlo Mags more accessible. I almost forgive you for devaluing them. I guess the your index makes up for it. Do you have a schedule for the zoom sessions?
Sounds like a great series.
