You can do it close up, at a distance but it does not feel like a normal card. It does look like one though

As a beginner, it might be more sensible use of your budget to get a couple of books rather than one gimmick. With something like Card College 1&2 you'd get hundreds of tricks for the price of one "gimmick" trick. If you want something with no sleight of hand, then Card College Light would be worthy of your consideration. But yes, to answer your question, you could do this as a beginner.
