When we saw this at Magifest, it stopped us in our tracks.

Porthole, by Matteo Pittenger, is one of those tricks that is easy to do, fun to watch, and has visuals that look like they are straight out of Looney Tunes.

A hole is punched at one end of a card; a black sticker is placed at the other. You slide a pencil into the hole, but the pencil tip appears to come directly through the sticker on the opposite side. It's fun, visual, and easy. But the greatest part? Everything can be examined, both before, and after. There is nothing to find.

“Porthole” may look like something that can only work for social media, but we promise it looks even better in person. It comes with everything you need to perform this hyper visual effect, as well as a protective sleeve to keep your gimmick safe. It’s quick to learn, practical to carry, and built for real-world reactions, not just the camera.

Customer reviews for Porthole

Matthew
I started talking with Matteo a while back on Facebook and this is definitely someone to watch in the magic world.

This is a really cool trick that will blow peoples minds. Like wait a minute… that N02 pencil just broke thru into another dimension.

Just give it practice and it will feel really smooth, you’ll start fooling yourself! Not hard to learn at all, just watch your environment and angles.

This is the second trick I’ve purchased now and anxious to see what comes out. You can tell he puts a lot of care and attention into his work, you will get a quality product that’s been well tended to.

Definitely one to get, very unique!

I am fascinated by visual magic that feels fanciful and playful, like a cartoon brought to life. There have been several great releases by Calen Morelli, Antonio Bourgeois and Roddy McGhee in this categorey that are amazing, but PortHole by Matteo ticks all the boxes. It was my favorite piece of magic that I bought at MagiFest. Not only it a great, surprising illusion, it is super practical. The set-up and clean up are so well manufactured and orchestrated that you can begin and end clean with a playing card and a pencil that can be immediately handed out. I took it to Blackpool and showed it to everyone I met. Lloyd Barnes ended up putting it on his Blackpool 2026 video

I had the pleasure of first meeting Mateo at MagiFest, and I was immediately blown away by his creativity and the way he approaches magic. You can tell right away that he’s not just creating tricks—he’s creating memorable, visual moments that truly connect with an audience.

  • Mark asks: Does it look better in person? I really didn't see the pencil point aligned with the hole at the front in the demo video a little too much tell. It it looks like a $10 download not a $60 trick. So what am I missing?

    • 1. Will responds:Matteo is an emerging creator and personally hand crafts each gimmick, it is very well made. While I agree with your feedback about the particular angle you see in the video. In real life performance, that is not scrutinized as much as you are doing in this case. I own PortHole and gladly spent the money, cause I know it is something I will use again and again in my professional performances
    • 2. Matthew responds:I own it as well and you can really have a lot of flexibility with the angle you just need to practice it like any other trick. I can tell a lot of work went into creating it and it feels solid. I’ve had things that you knew would fall apart after too many uses. This is well worth the expenditure. Matt
  • David asks: $60? It “stopped you cold”? Really? Why?

    • 1. David responds:Where are the reviews for this marvel? So you hold something in your non penciled hand and angle the card so the actual tip can’t be seen?
    • 2. Will responds:I’ve performed this numerous times and those I’ve shown it to have loved it. The cost is certainly worth the time taken to create this handcrafted custom gimmick.
  • Barry and asks: Do you need to wear black or very dark clothing?

    • 1. Jonathan responds:Um...watch the trailer
    • 2. Will responds:No. This is not relevant to this product, this can be used in strolling, restaurant or social media magic.
