Mentalissimo
John Bannon, one of Vanishing Inc's very favorite creators, had a much-loved book finally reprinted: Mentalissimo. What makes this collection of card effects different from his previous collections is this: every effect in this book has a "mental" theme to it. You read the minds of spectators, predict outcomes, and know in advance decisions that spectators will make. Classics are approached, like "Out of this World," but from the presentational angle of a mentalist.
What makes John Bannon one of the most popular creators in the field is his penchant for creating workable, practical, and easy solutions to direct effects. He has built a huge following of card-trick-loving magicians because his work touches the all-important three aspects of a trick: the premise, the construction, and the presentation. Bannon treats all three with equal appreciation. Reading a Bannon trick is like lifting the casing from a beautiful watch. Mentalissimo is a book for people who enjoy card tricks
and their methods. People who, like John, delight in the
construction of a new effect as much as performing it.
Sometimes the devious methodology does get in the way
of creating a direct and memorable effect for the spectators.
There is a feeling that it is almost a book of notes and ideas
that give us an overview of the themes, plots, and methods
that are currently occupying John Bannon’s attention. Not
that the tricks aren’t described in full, they absolutely are
and there are nearly 30 of them and all photographically
illustrated. But instead of describing one perfect method
John often describes several approaches to the same effect
as he weighs the value of each. It’s almost like having a
card session. While some would rather have a more direct
path laid out to their mysteries, others will enjoy the playful
exploration that John Bannon offers with all its dealing,
counting, and toying of the deck. When it comes to subtle
card effects you couldn’t have a more expert guide.
