Highly recommended if you want to :
1) find or hone your unique performing persona
2) take the magic tricks and techniques that you already have and create original presentations to fit that persona
3) or starting with your persona, brainstorm tricks that would fit it, along with recommended resources.

I’ve been a fan of Rachel’s ever since her Fool Us appearance, so was sorry to have missed her at The Session here in the UK, but delighted to be able to get the ebook and the video download of her performance and lecture.

If you’re just on the look out for new tricks, look elsewhere, but serious magicians, both professional and hobbyists, will always recognise the value of these kind of work.

Once again Rachel wins the bigger game.

Great notes on mind mapping. Rachel really goes into detail on how to add layers to your magic and take it to the next level.
If you're looking to expand your understanding of your own persona and how you can really let who you are as a performer shine through, you'll want to get this.
If you're looking to create routines that are more specific to you and perhaps come up with your own, you'll want to get this.
Mind Mapping in Magic is a great introduction to the creative process that should be highlighted more.

My initial thought was disappointment as I didn’t think much of the booklet (must stress booklet, not a book) BUT then I watched the accompanying video download and the value was really there. The performance demonstrates by example and the explanation of the process afterwards delivers a simple concept in a really easy to use way.
So, I’d say it’s a really brilliant mini-lecture accompanied by a booklet that will inspire you to rethink how you present yourself, to personalise your magic, select the right tricks and make deliberate presentation choices and then guide you on how.
If you even just approach your performance character in this way, you’ll be better off for it.

Rachel Wax is a force to be reckoned with! Smart, savvy and edgy with a “New York”stand up comedian type persona! Her “Magic” performance in the video is, well, alright. I’m not sure that she is perhaps the best example of women in magic (and there are many INCREDIBLE female performers) but she is absolutely worth the watch! Her ideas on organizing your performances to suit your personality is spot on, especially for someone just starting out in their magic journey. Her approach to taking an older effect and making it your own is very powerful! I would add, do your homework on the history of the effects and compose patter that incorporates an entertaining narrative that best suits your personality. Think Eugene Burger’s “Gypsy Thread” masterpiece! An old school effect taken to the highest level of performance!

The booklet doesn't contribute that much, but the video of the lecture shows some good effects and does a good job of showcasing the process that Rachel is describing - she does a good job of showing all the ways that she uses mind maps. There was nothing here earth-shattering, but it contained plenty of good ideas.

    • 1. Cayce responds:You can print it. I am a hard copy person but, in this instance, I think the ebook has the benefit because you can print the worksheets if you want to use them versus writing in the book.
