Customer reviews for The Show Doctor

Rick
I am halfway through the book and I am loving it. I think this is a book every magician should have. I have sort of skipped the tricks in it though as I bought the book for Jeff's performing philosophy and tips on how to be a better performer. You're getting real world advice from a guy who's been there and done that. I think this book is great.

I've been into magic most of my life and even performed in my 20s & 30's at any events that needed entertainment. But the whole reason for me buying the book was to improve my show that I've put together within the last 6 or 7 months. After I stopped performing, I had a long layoff of years in which I didn't perform, so I am just trying to get back into the swing of things.

What kind of book is this? The book is made up of two sections the first being Jeff's advice & tips on how to improve your show (even if you don't have a show yet - his advice on performing magic will help you be a better performer) and the second part of the book is made up of Jeff's unpublished 11 routines ranging from stage illusions, stand-up routines, manipulation, close-up magic, cards and mentalism. After going through the book, I am convinced that Jeff McBride can help one to improve their magic & performance skills. Jeff talks about real world stuff that can be fixed with some insight from someone who's "been there & done that."

What stood out in the book for me was that I needed to write out my whole show in a notebook and use the camera on my laptop to stop the "ums" & "ahs" and the pauses where I needed to think about what I was going to do and say next. The camera doesn't lie. That's one of the main things I learned from this book and a whole lot more. Jeff's writing style is very conversational and is easy to read.

As far as the routines in the book go, I was very attracted to Time Travel Cards...a mentalism routine which I haven't tried out yet. But plan to. It uses a deck of cards.

Who this book is for? Any who performs magic, intermediate performers and even old timers like me who are looking to learn something new. There is gold here in this book and I am glad I own it and I am sure I'll be revisiting it over time.
