How practical would it be to set up in front of an audience that is already seated such as in a close-up competition?

If you have practiced with it during enough rehearsals, it is very practical. You could walk up to the table, lay your mat on the tables and no suspicious should be aroused.

Can it be done with hard based close up pads

It is recommended with the normal soft base pads

It works with almost any color or size. A good rule of thumb would be to get a mat that has the room to perform a matrix. Extra small pads would probably make this very difficult.

I understand the kit transforms an ordinary close up mat. But once it is installed, can it be removed and attached to a different close up mat? I assume yet but want to make sure. Also, what is the minimum size close up mat you recommend using? Thank you.

Yes the Kit can be easily moved from pad to pad. The minimum size is 12 inches across to make sure the apparatus fits.
