To answer your question you do not need to solve the cube before you start. However not saying that you don't but if you don't know how to solve a cube I don't recommend this at all. Start with cube 3 or cube fx as they teach you how to solve the cube. This is for advanced magicians and there will be moments where you do mess up. Hope this helps.

They do not teach you how to solve a shuffled cube but go over some essential speed cubing techniques. The good news, there are tons of free tutorials on YouTube that will teach you how to solve a cube. You can also check out Cube3 as an option for beginner learning.

Okay let me start by saying that this product is amazing and it kills. However it is not for the beginner it is for advanced Rubiks cube magicians if you're barely getting into Rubiks cube magic I do not recommend this product. I recommend starting with Cube 3 or Cube FX as you will need to learn how to solve a cube. I have been doing Rubiks cube magic for 5 years and I was still messing up and I had to solve the cube at least 3 times. However whenever you're done learning how to solve the cube this product will be amazing to add to your repertoire. I did this at a walk around event and everyone was in disbelief. I definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to up their game in Rubiks cube magic 5 stars from me.
