Imagine performing the classic effect, Sands of the Desert with colorful liquids! An original effect that is visual, easy to do and makes a big impact on your audiences.

You show an empty bucket, and three bottles with three different, colored liquids and three empty, transparent cups. Use sodas, juices, or energizer drinks—you choose! Anything bright and colorful.

You pour each liquid, one at a time, into the bucket -- perhaps blue, yellow and finally red.

Next, you swirl the bucket around, mixing all of the liquids into a magical cocktail. Then the magic happens as you take one of the empty plastic cups, dip it into the bucket—and when you lift it out, it’s filled with a blue drink! Take another cup and repeat this puzzling act of prestidigitation... as you extract a yellow drink. Finally, you tip the bucket so your audience can see inside it, as you pour the remaining red liquid, filling the third cup.

I have always wanted to have a "Sands of the Dessert" type routine in my repertoire, but the trick IS messy and you're on the hook for refills (which may become unavailable) for life. The Cocktail preserves the effect with less mess (your hands don't get wet) and no refills. The instructional video (included on CD, for a nice change) offers two presentations. In my opinion, one of the two is more effective and the other more versatile in that it can be performed in more settings. The problem with the "better" of the two presentations is nearly unavoidable, tell-tale noise, enough to need significant cover — music or a couple of timely sneezes perhaps. That said this is a winner and the kind of thing your audience doesn't see every day.

I bought this because I was not happy with the sands of the desert I had (color of sands I had were weak, it was messy, was reluctant to transport the cut glass bowl I needed, and I did not want to spend the rather high cost of chemicals for the black water effect). I bought the Cocktail at the 2020 Las Vegas SAM convention. It is great and performance in the videos is as you see it. I do not find it difficult to perform. I am using a metal container (actually any material container can be easily adapted in my mind) from Hobby Lobby. I am not finding a big problem with noise as it is sort of covered by the natural knocking of the glass against the container. A little leakage in it that is not a major problem because I have fixed it (I plugged it up but those making it may want to use clear silicone as I did). I hope it stays around for a time as my main worry is having to eventually replace the glasses and I am not sure I can find what I need to do it myself. I really like this. It is clean in performance, straight forward, and aesthetically great.

    • 2. Peter responds:The performer can take a drink from any glass. A member of the audience can only drink from the last one.

Reading you can and seeing him constantly flip the bucket around will not satisfy my idea of freely showing it empty to the audience. I just want to know if you can show them the bucket in the same position as he shows them when he pours the final drink

  • Glenn asks: Is this simply a DVD that I am getting here?

    • 2. Stephen responds:Along with a DVD, you get the special plastic tumblers needed and secret parts that make the trick work. However you will still need to find a magnetic metal container that is big enough to hold everything, which is not as easy as it sounds.
    • 3. Stephen responds: On the metal container, a little ingenuity can easily adapt any container that otherwise fits the bill. I, however, am using a can I obtained in the States from Hobby Lobby that works quite well (1830's medicine show themed). Stephen J.
