My Favorite Card Tricks: Caleb Wiles

We asked some of magic's greatest minds to share with us their favorite card tricks. This week is the turn of Caleb Wiles. You may know him from from his hit effects, ReSwindled and Fully Automatic Card Trick which he performed on Fool Us. Over to Caleb:

I'd find it difficult to nail down my top 50 card tricks, but the guys at Vanishing Inc are insisting on ONLY 3! Whew! Well, if I'm forced to choose, here are my current selections:

** Paperclipped by Jay Sankey ** It's rare when I don't end a walk-around set with some presentation of Paperclipped. I use this modern classic effect as a kicker for many routines. Probably my favorite is my iDeck routine from Main Event: The Knockout Card Magic of Caleb Wiles. It's a nerdy premise with an extremely high "magic per minute" ratio that KILLS in formal close-up and casual situations.

** Re-set by Paul Harris ** I've performed in so many cool environments, befriended most of my favorite magicians, and have even been featured on Penn & Teller's Fool Us. But the coolest moment of my magic career may still be the phone call I received from Paul Harris years ago when I was a complete unknown. Paul had heard about my handling for his acclaimed Re-Set routine (which I called ReSwindled. He considered it to be the best version he'd ever seen and said he had switched to performing it himself. It's been a staple of my repertoire for more than 15 years.

** Stand-Up Monte by Garrett Thomas ** I don't think there's a better opener in all of magic. I almost feel bad for how quickly and hard you can pummel an audience with this routine. It's the perfect example of what I call "machine gun magic." When I approach a group at a party, this is usually the first thing I show them. It instantly establishes my credibility as an expert sleight-of-hand artist and they can't wait to see what's next!
