John Guastaferro is one of our favorite magicians for a good reason. His magic is well structured, his presentations are creative, and he is one of the nicest people we’ve ever met. Whenever John tells us he’s working on something, we know it's going to be incredible. That couldn’t be truer than it is with Final Degree.

Final Degree isn’t just a book of John’s best pieces of magic. It’s one of the best books we’ve ever published.

Across twenty-eight card routines, John shares effects he has refined over a course of years, making small, deliberate changes until each routine reaches its final form. While the majority of these routines are being shared here for the very first time, fans of John’s previous works will be incredibly excited to read updated versions of some of his best effects.

You’ll find modern takes on classics, such as “Detour,” John’s streamlined Ambitious Card routine, and “Progressively Wild,” a Wild Card routine using a normal deck. If you enjoy powerful magic with minimal sleight of hand, “Handout Aces” (where spectators cut to all four Aces) will be a highlight. Workers will love effects like “Mind Trip,” a simple yet incredibly strong transposition routine that went straight into our walkaround sets. Don’t worry, fans of sleight of hand will have plenty of moves to play with, such as John’s Double Down Control and the Relay Shuffle.

Beyond the moves and routines, Final Degree also includes several inspirational and informational essays on topics like living with purpose, branding, and building routines. John draws on not just his experience as a magician, but as a speaker, marketer, and philanthropist to give you advice you didn’t even know you needed.

Final Degree builds on the books before it. (Don’t worry, you don’t need to have read them before reading this book!) John first introduced his “one degree” theory in One Degree, changing the way many magicians thought about refinement and construction. He expanded that thinking in The Nth Degree, delivering stronger magic through thoughtful, incremental improvement. With Final Degree, he brings the trilogy to a close, and he certainly left the best till last.

Together, this trilogy includes almost seventy-five practical routines that have been honed over years in front of hundreds of audiences. While each book is incredible on its own, together they make a fantastic collection of card magic from one of magic’s best creators.

You can get each book separately, or, if you purchase all three volumes, we'll provide a bespoke slipcase to display them handsomely on your shelf. This limited edition slipcase was designed by John in collaboration with our team, and is designed to protect and display the books in the best way possible. It’s the perfect way to celebrate the Degree Trilogy. (If you already own the books, you can purchase just the empty slipcase here.)

Whether you’re looking to complete the collection, want to learn powerful routines, or are interested in John’s incredible insights, Final Degree is an essential purchase for any serious magician.

Customer reviews for Final Degree

Yuriy
This is a really amazing book, all of his books are! John has a mindset about going the extra mile, illuminating the impossible one degree at a time and and constantly pushing things to the next level. It’s a mindset that can be applied not only to your magic, but to your overall attitude and approach to life.
James
The Degree Trilogy is amazing card magic. Intermediate level, nothing knuckle busting, but hard hitting. John Gustaferro is one of my favorites.

Amazing book, John G does it again! Intermediate card magic that hits hard but won't hurt your hands. Highly recommend all three of his books.

Another amazing book! The tricks are fantastic, strong, direct, and incredibly well‑constructed. It truly feels like the material has been refined to its final degree. A few of the effects were exactly what I’d been searching for, which made me unbelievably happy. The essays are excellent too, full of genuinely valuable advice. I can’t recommend this highly enough, even if only for the insight into the thinking behind the magic.

John G. does it again. I have been a fan of his since he put out the VHS tape, “Full Circle.” This book takes what he has built in First Degree and the Nth Degree and expands it. John has a way of me stopping and thinking, “There is so smart thinking here!” He can take stuff that he created, and I am already doing (to great satisfaction) and through a slight shift (One Degree) get so much more out of the effect. The essays in the book are thought provoking and will teach you as much as the effects themselves. If you are one that tends to skip over essays and think the meat of the book is all found in the effects, do yourself a favor and read an essay after each time you work on an effect. You will be glad you did.

Summed up: Get this book. Study this book.

This is such a beautiful book. Effects that could easily find their way in your repertoire. I also bought the slipcase and they house all three of his degree books. If you don’t have them I would whole heartedly recommend them. You undertake a journey with John through these books and see how routines have evolved by degrees. One of my favourite effects from One Degree was Mr E takes a stroll. John has developed this already strong routine through Nth Degree and Final Degree to an effect on steroids. So many great routines, my favourites so far are Mr E takes a turn, Wonder Aces, Bets in Show and Ultimate Fate. These are books that will keep giving and take you on a journey elevating your magic. Highly recommended. Invest in your magic and save up and buy all three books in the Degree Trilogy.

I don't know whether to tell you about the man or his book first.

I discovered John in 2020 with Wonder Aces. I was immediately captivated by the fluidity of his movements and the intelligence behind each gesture. In my opinion, this is the most fascinating aspect of his magic: a highly refined technique, presented with apparent simplicity.
This same intelligence, these masterful subtleties, are fully present in The Final Degree. The book is as enriching as it is inspiring. I particularly appreciated the inclusion of the sources at the end of each routine, a testament to the respect and magical knowledge that inform his work.
I highly recommend you discover this trilogy… and the generous man who, through everything he does, spreads joy with rare elegance.

John follows up One Degree and The Nth Degree with a final volume in this trilogy that absolutely lives up to the exceptional quality of its predecessors. Final Degree, for me, highlights more than ever John's playful ingenuity when it comes to premise and to integrating additional low-tech props; never have a Slinky or small novelty painter's easel been used in a magic trick in such unusual yet ingenious ways. These card tricks are masterclasses in technical efficiency, structure, and plot. A terrific book.
Brian
This a beautiful book, well done Vanishing Inc in the work you have presented. I opened the book on "Handout Aces" and spent the night learning it, great routine. John has given us another brilliant book to study and learn from and we get "Wonder Aces" in print for the first time too.
Martin
The final book in the trilogy had the challenging task of following two exceptional volumes –in my opinion, it exceeded the challenge. Strong impactful card magic with clever plots, well written and photographed. My personal favorites so far include Lightning Strikes Twice (found excellent stickers on amazon), Boxed Transpo, Handout Aces and Mr. E Takes a Stroll. Enjoyable reading with effects that are entertaining. Essays are enlightening and thought provoking -- no filler. My only disappointment is that this book is not the 3d in a four part series.
Daniel
Couldn't be more happy to have John's trilogy. His thinking on creating unique magic moments is unmatchable. And the tricks are killers. You can open the book anywhere you want and you will want to have that trick in your repertoire.
Gerhard
Really happy that this was finally released and surely does not dissapoint. JohnG creativity is fantastic. All the tricks in the book have some added ideas. The first 3 tricks knocks it out the park. So haply to have all 3 books in the trilogy. Can happily recommend all the books in th series.

    • 1. Jim responds:It does not.

    • 1. Jim responds:You can choose it in the menu above the green 'Add to cart' button.
  • Lloyd asks: The baby jokers are just jokers from jumbo deck?

    • 1. John (creator) responds:Yes
  • Daren asks: Is Clairvoyance exactly what is taught on your dvds or is the handling slightly different?

    • 1. John (creator) responds:This is essentially the same as the DVDs…but with an added presentational bit with how the 10 cards are initially removed from the deck…annd extra tips on the Faro Shuffle.
  • Frank asks: How easy or intermediate are any required sleights ? If sleights are needed, are they explained in the book ?

    • 1. John (creator) responds:Every effect is within the skill level of the intermediate card magician. There are also a few self-working effects. Every move is described in detail.
  • Michael asks: Does the book link to videos of the tricks and explanations (like is done with Particle System)?

    • 1. John (creator) responds:There are no video links or instructions
  • Dean asks: Are there any Gaff cards required or any additional items needed to do the tricks?

    • 1. John (creator) responds:20 of the 28 effects use nothing more than a standard deck of cards.
    • 2. Jason responds:There are a few tricks that require some “gaff” style cards but nothing crazy. My favorite routine from the book is Lighting Strikes Twice and all you need is a lightning bolt sticker or the ability to draw a lightning bolt. Amazing book, I highly recommend.
