Eggs
By Andi Gladwin -
While in Las Vegas, I’ve eaten in more restaurants than I probably should. But who can blame me? I’m a Brit in a world of excess - and I’m loving trying out different local restaurants and coffee shops to what I'd normally do as a tourist.
But enough about me putting on weight.
The other day, I had breakfast in a southern place - it was one of the nicest breakfasts of the trip so far. But here’s what intrigued me: they closed after breakfast. They realised that to be the best at breakfast, they shouldn’t complicate things by also trying to do lunch and dinner too. It seems that they realised that instead of being generalists like most other restaurants, they should become eggsperts (boom ... that’s the quality wordplay you’ve come to expect from the guy who gave you such names as “Vanishing Inc.” and “CoinRUNEque.”). They focussed all of their energies into becoming the champions of breakfasts instead of being just another all-day restaurant.
In my eyes, experts and specialists will always win longterm. This is the kind of thing I have talked about in my lectures for years and wrote about in my free book, Going Pro. Magicians who appear to focus on one area will always do better than those who advertise as magicians for all occasions. Most of my clients prefer to hire a professional close-up magician than a guy who also does kids magic, and a bit of mentalism on the side. And just like the breakfast place — it's not just about being the best you can, but about making decisions that show your audience that you have made those decisions.
