Three Tips for a Successful Virtual Show
By Ben Young -
With the recent rise in virtual shows, it can be overwhelming trying to get all the details just right! Our new hit ebook Lights Camera Magic has DOZENS of tips, ideas, and strategies to make your virtual shows rock the house, but here are 3 tips to get you started.
1. Set your phone to "Do Not Disturb." It's common sense, but easy to forget! You don't want your phone dinging with every text and phone call you receive, plus you don't need the on-screen distraction with visual notifications during the show.
2. Turn off all other devices in the house that could disturb WiFi signal. The more devices connected to your home's WiFi, the less signal each device gets. Streaming uses a lot of juice, and a weak signal could mean a fuzzy image, a lag between audio and video, and even your video freezing completely. Avoid this by turning off or disconnecting spouses' phones, computers, gaming systems, and any internet-connected device not being used for your show.
3. Test Test Test! Run a rehearsal with a few magician friends, so you can all work out the lighting, angles, staging, etc. Help each other prepare before you get in front of paying audiences.
BONUS Lean into the technology! Don't just try to perform your standard show and ignore the camera. EMBRACE AND UTILIZE IT. Show playing cards nice and close to the camera so it fills your audience's screen. Encourage interaction either on-screen or in the chat, and acknowledge people's reactions. In short: Adapt, and have fun with it!
