Who Was Tim Conover?
Tim Conover was one of the most respected and influential mentalists in the world. He was a performer whose mastery of technique and psychology made audiences believe the impossible. His work combined the precision of a scientist, the imagination of an artist, and the energy of a showman. Tragically, he passed away in February of 2011, and many magicians have never seen how great he truly was.
Tim Conover grew up in Alexandria, Virginia. Like many magicians of his generation, he was captivated by the 1975 Doug Henning Magic Show Christmas Special. That spark turned into a lifelong passion when he received his first magic set that same year. From that moment, magic became his purpose.
Through high school and college, Tim practiced relentlessly for hours a day and performed wherever he could. He entertained passengers on the Auto Train between Washington, D.C., and Florida, and became a fixture in Washington nightclubs. Those early performances honed his technical skill and built the foundation for his legendary attention to detail and pursuit of perfection.
After earning his bachelor’s degree, Tim spent several years in the telecommunications industry before turning to performing full-time. He started performing at trade shows and corporate events, where he could showcase his art to thousands of people, sometimes performing as many as sixteen shows a day.
Was Tim Conover a Mentalist?
In 1989, Tim Conover made a bold shift. Building on his deep background in sleight-of-hand and misdirection, he turned his focus to the world of mentalism. His shows were fast-paced, interactive, and astonishing. His act was a whirlwind of revelations, magic, and audience participation.
Tim’s career was filled with milestones that underscored his brilliance. In 1993, he became the first and only mentalist ever to win the Gold Medal at the World Summit of Magic. Two years later, he received the prestigious Dunninger Memorial Award from the Psychic Entertainers Association for distinguished professionalism in the performance of mentalism. In 2005, he was honored with the Milbourne Christopher Award for his notable contributions to the art of magic.
Beyond his technical genius, Tim Conover was known for his kindness and humility. He mentored fellow magicians, shared his insights freely, and never lost his childlike sense of wonder. As Paul Gertner once said, “Watching him perform made me feel like a kid again.”
Tim passed away in 2011 at the age of 51, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy. His influence continues to ripple through the worlds of both magic and mentalism, inspiring performers to push boundaries, pursue perfection, and, most importantly, to make audiences believe in the impossible.
Tim Conover was an artist who reminded us how beautiful it is to be fooled. We are honored to preserve his legacy with Conover.
