Buatier de Kolta and the Victorian Perception of Magic

Buatier de Kolta invented some of the most famous illusions in history: the Vanishing Bird Cage, the Vanishing Lady, and the Expanding Die. This video essay looks at his life and work, but more importantly at what made him matter to his time. De Kolta didn't just perform illusions — he embodied an idea his culture needed. His audiences recognised something in him that went beyond conjuring: a cultural archetype of an obsessed scientist. And De Kolta was not just playing this role, he was actually living that life.
