Robert-Houdin and the Art of Becoming a Legend
By Alex Romanoff -
Robert-Houdin is called the Father of Modern Magic. He is a unique figure who has inspired magicians since the 19th century. Harry Houdini named himself after him.
But what actually made Robert-Houdin a legend wasn't just his performances. It was how he told his own story.
This video essay looks at the life of Robert-Houdin in the context of his time and culture. We talk about his show, his theatre, his legacy and most importantly about his memoirs β a carefully constructed 19th century narrative that inspired generations of magicians to take their craft seriously. To understand why it worked, and why Houdini made a huge mistake trying to destroy Robert-Houdin's name, we explore the idea of Romantic genius, the work of German writer Goethe, and how artists become legends in the eyes of history.
And in the end, we look at the real life behind the legend β which turns out to be far more complex and more human than the myth.
